When it comes to gardening, mulching is an essential step. This will slow down weeds, conserve water, and help prevent soil erosion. Mulching, if done in the fall, can also help prevent the need for tillage. There are many different things you can use for mulch — and most of them are free.
Use herbs stored in the spring. Ask your neighbors to share if they also carry their pieces in a bag.

Newspaper is a wonderful waste block and mulch. Ask in stores where newspapers are available to see if you might have any leftover papers from yesterday or collect old papers from your neighborhood or office.
Many tree services are looking for a place to drop off wood chips. Call different Tree Service companies and see if you can get off the list. Many will even deliver them to you for free if you have a chip in your area.
Autumn leaves can be harvested to be used for mulch in the spring or used for mulch in the fall. If your neighbors or friends rake their leaves and put them in bags, ask if you can take them off their hands.
