How to Grow Large Amounts of Ginger in Containers

If you decide that you want to grow native ginger from your local grocery store, try looking for organically grown ginger. While you may have success growing conventionally grown ginger, this type of ginger may need to be treated with chemicals to prevent germination, which can hinder growth. Organically grown ginger roots are generally easier to grow.

The larger the rhizome you start with, the faster your ginger plants will grow. So look for plant stems that are full, firm, thick, and 4 to 6 inches long with multiple fingers.

Examine your eyes carefully, there will be new ginger growing. The eyes are usually found at the ends of ginger stems and appear slightly yellowish and brown in color. The more eyes your rhizome has, the more ginger roots it can produce.

While standard culinary ginger is easy to find in grocery stores and garden centers, if you’re interested in growing less common types of ginger, you’ll need to order your root online.
