How to Keep Snakes Out of Your Garden

This can be a curse or a blessing, depending on how you look at it. If you’re trying to keep snakes out of your yard or garden, check out these tips and tricks to protect your property.
Here are some tips and steps to keep these creepy crawlies out of your yard, along with some reasons why you shouldn’t have them. I’ll review all the things that have been touted as the best snake repellents, discuss strategies that are effective in deterring them, and look at common examples of things that don’t work.

  1. Clean up your yard.
Snakes love to have places to hide. The easiest way to keep unwanted snakes out of your yard and garden is to keep them clean.

The first step is to walk around your yard and make a list of things to consider. Look for potential hiding places for snakes:

A clump of trees, especially if they have been in your yard for a year.
It is important to rake and rake up leaves immediately.
Long grass needs to be cut.
Cans, trash, and other debris need to be picked up.
Old flower pots are a great place for snakes to hang out.
Folded tarps and plastic bags make easy, shady places.
The less clutter around the yard, the fewer places for snakes to hide. A cluttered yard is almost guaranteed to be a snake’s go-to, as it attracts mice. When mice arrive, snakes are like the evening bell, so you should focus on removing the debris.

  1. Persistent waterlogging
Some yards have built-in ponds or other water features, while others simply have standing water. If you have something purposely built like a fountain, pond, or swimming pool, you need to understand that snakes will be attracted to it (and mosquitoes will be attracted to it too!).

Snakes, like us, are attracted to water sources. If there is a wet area in your yard, it is a problem area…clean it up. Not only will you eliminate your snake problem, but your mosquito problem as well.

It is especially important to check your yard for new sources after a heavy rain, especially when you are out and about.
